RDC-GADCC's 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women: Walk for a Cause, Hataw & Opening Program in Butuan City

Agusan Norte 2nd Dist. Cong. Ma. Angelica Amante-Matba, as the keynote speaker stresses that violence against women cuts across all ages of life. Many women are suffering from abuses not only physical, but also emotional and psychological, during the kick-off ceremony of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women held recently in Butuan City. Fr. James Michael Abellanosa, secretary to the Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos reveals that in time with the 18-day campaign is the Mindanao Week of Peace (MWOP) celebration from November 24-30, 2011 with lined-up activities for the stakeholders. He also bares that MWOP celebration is connected with the campaign to end violence against women because when there is no violence, there is peace. (PIA-Caraga)

Gender and Development Coordinating Committee (GADCC) chairperson and Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Caraga Regional Director Atty. Marylin Pintor bares that the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey conducted among women aged 15-49, revealed that one in five women has experienced physical violence since age 15; and one in ten experience sexual violence. Among women who have experienced physical or sexual violence, 26.9 percent fought back verbally, 21.2% fought back physically, and 17.5 percent sought help to try to stop the violence while of those who sought help to stop the violence, 45.1 percent went to their own family, 28.5 percent from friends and neighbors and 14.5 percent from in-laws. This was held recently during the kick-off ceremony of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women in Butuan City. (PIA-Caraga)

Said activity is spearheaded by the Regional Development Council - Gender and Development Coordinating Committee (RDC-GADCC), chaired by Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Caraga Regional Director Atty.
